Off the Hook

I grew up at the mouth of the River Tweed and walked daily along the banks of the river with my Gran as a child. Salmon fishing is a huge part of the culture and history of that area although it has fallen into decline over the years due to falling fish stocks. This picture was inspired by my childhood memories of watching the fishermen and my photography of the river as an adult when I walked along it’s banks with our own children.

Mystery

He soars high in the sky on silent wings. His world exists high above our lives. He spreads his beautiful wings and glides effortlessly on mysterious, unseen currents of air. He lives in a world we cannot see but our world is a patchwork quilt to him and he sees everything from his place up high.

The Holly King and the Watcher

In the twilight of his time , before the Oak King reclaims his throne, the Holly King watches over the creatures of the forest. Keeping them safe in the harsh winter. The land may be frozen but beauty can be found everywhere. The snow blankets the earth in its pristine cloak of white. The holly and the berries adorn the trees and the Aurora lights up the Northern sky. The fox sleeps safe in winters embrace and the snowy owl silently watches.

The Ancient One

The ancient wolf sits in the forest. This is his domain, he knows every tree & path. He has the wisdom of age and the knowledge of his pack & ancestors running through his veins. Spring approaches though and the nights are getting shorter. His time in this world is drawing to a close. Soon the world will be bathed in summers sun and his place is in the shadows. It is time now for him to return to his realm. Summer will come and go and, once again, the night will cloak the earth in a velvet caress. The Ancient One will return to the forest, once again ruler of his domain.

Whispers of Nature

Everywhere has its magical places sometimes we just need to find them. This is one such place. Near the center of a busy town is this little piece of tranquility. A place to study nature. To write journals and draw pictures of leaves using the tree as a desk. A place to take a flask of hot chocolate & sausage rolls fresh from the oven and eat them while waiting for the moon to rise. Homemade bird feeders adorn the trees nearby and seeds are carried by the river on their way to new beginnings downstream. It is a place to find peace in our busy, hectic lives and to just enjoy nature and the changing seasons. A place to take a breath and step away from the pressures of today’s society and enjoy the gentle pleasures that nature can provide.

The Visit

On a winters night footsteps in the snow hold hidden promise. Who made those footsteps, where were they going, who did they see? Or maybe a loved one who has passed has made the journey, drawn by the light in the window to silently visit one more time.

Natural Beauty vs Disposable Society

A seascape to raise awareness of plastic pollution on the beautiful beaches of the Outer Hebrides. A Wet felted background with needle felted detail. The houses are made from silk carrier rods. Hand embroidered French knots for the ocean spray. All the plastic pollution was embroidered on cotton then cut out and stitched onto the painting with felt padding inside each piece to make it more 3D. This was a beach where I used to live and all the pollution on the beach was from photographs I took of the rubbish there.

Nightfire
Nightfire focuses on the risk to tigers of extinction. There are currently more tigers in captivity in the US than there are left in the wild. It is thought that only 3900 wild tigers exist globally. They have declined by 95% since the beginning of the 20th century and are officially classed as endangered.
These beautiful animals are at risk from the illegal poaching and wildlife trade. The body parts of at least 110 tigers were seized in Asia annually between 2000 and 2015. They are mainly killed for luxury products using their skin and bones. This, alongside loss of habitat and loss of prey due to hunting has led to their current endangered status.
It is unthinkable that future generations may live in a world where these animals do not exist in the wild. Action needs to be taken to prevent the illegal trade in wildlife and the loss of habitat caused by human encroachment into their historic ranges.

Landmarks

Landmarks reminds you of the journey home to a loved one. Looking for the familiar sites that tell you you’re nearly there. Anticipating the warm hug and the scent of home, the cup of tea and buttered toast that you will soon be enjoying, warming your hands after the long journey through the snowy landscape.
